Seems like there’s already a decent amount of progress made in the development of Final Fantasy XVI.
The announcement of Final Fantasy XVI in September came as a bit of a welcome surprise as not only was it something unexpected for many fans, it will be the first Final Fantasy game to be released on the next generation of video game consoles.
But after watching the game’s glorious teaser trailer, one big question came up among Final Fantasy fans: how far along the development path is XVI?
Well as it turns out there’s already a decent amount of progress made in the game’s development, though don’t hold your breath just yet.
According to a Square Enix recruitment page (via Gemastu), the “basic development and scenario production” for XVI has already been completed.
“We have already completed basic development and scenario production, and are continuing to create large-scale resources and build boss battles while expanding our various development tools,” the website reads. “Also, most of our staff are carrying out their work remotely.”
Now “basic development and scenario production” are pretty vague terms and it suggests that while the narrative is more or less set in stone, there’s still a lot of work to be done so don’t expect a release date any time soon.

As for what we do know at this point, the game will feature a medieval fantasy setting (the first for a Final Fantasy game for a number of years), it is being produced by Naoki Yoshida (who led the critically-acclaimed relaunch of Final Fantasy XIV), and will be a timed exclusive for the PS5.
We won’t be getting much more info about Final Fantasy XVI and its development progress until 2021, which is when the next big information reveal is scheduled.
Guess that means you’ll have plenty of time to get your hands on a PS5 (or try your luck at winning one in our PS5 competition) before the game is released in a few years’ time.
