Former factor worker, Khaby Lame, who was laid off from his job in 2020 has overtaken Charli D’Amelio to become the most followed TikTok star in the world.

Lame – who boasts 143.1 million followers – hit the milestone on Wednesday (American time). Charli D’Amelia follows closely behind with 142.4 million followers.

Khaby Lame’s fans have flocked to Charli D’Amelia’s TikTok comments to inform the 18-year-old about the leader change.

“2nd not anymore 1st. FINALLY KHABY IS THE BEST,” one user wrote. Another added, “KHABY BETTERRRR,” with a third commenting, “personally I wouldn’t let Khaby take the number 1 spot that’s just me tho [sic].

Khaby Lame was laid off from factory work in March 2020, and swiftly took to the platform to create content. He predominately posts comedic videos mocking other TikTokers, as well as other simple life “hacks”.

Over the past two years Khaby Lame has amassed approximately three million followers a month, while Charli D’Amelia gains around one million.

“The pandemic had just started, and I was bored with a lot of time on my hands so I started making videos on TikTok,” Khaby Lame told Forbes in an interview this past March about his rapid rise to fame. “I speak a universal language that everyone understands.”

“I would describe myself as a simple person, but full of ideas and inspiration,” he added. “Making people laugh has always been my biggest passion in life.”

Along with claiming the crown of the most follower person on TikTok, the 22-year-old also holds the title of the most viewed video on the platform. The clip shows the influences debunking a “wing mirror hack” and has amassed over 350 million views.

In the two short years that Khaby Lame has been on TikTok, it’s estimated that he’s accumulated a net worth of approximately US $13 million – it’s been calculate that he made $6 million alone in 2021. Influencer Marketing Hub reports that Khaby could be earning between US $98,561 and $147,842 per TikTok post.
