Earlier this week, all of Victoria’s secondary education students engaged in a Year 12 VCE course had to sit the ever-dreaded GAT test.

As anticipated, with the GAT came the influx of GAT memes, especially in one social media group.

VCE DiscussionSpace, the single largest social media student group on Facebook, is home to thousands of memes, but it was especially flooded with memes – good, bad, and well, terrible – after Wednesday’s test.

The GATchphrase:

One poignant moment worth noting was this year’s GATchphrase.

Each year, students in the group select one topic they’ll write the English component about. In previous years, topics have included: Shannon Noll’s Australian Idol robbery,  and Schapelle Corby.

However, on the highly humerous side of life, last year’s topic was “If the teacher doesn’t arrive within 15 minutes we are legally allowed to leave.” That’s a commonly disputed [and untrue] policy students at many schools have adopted.

This year’s topic? ‘I got the horses in the GAT.’

Oh no, Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’ arguably terrible song has been meme’d on a broad scale.

Anyhow, here it is – the best memes to come out of the 2019 GAT test. [P.S. you just might not understand these if you didn’t take part in the GAT this year.]

CARA IN SEPTEMBER OF 2016: “MY BRUSH TURKEY DETECTOR IS OFF THE CHARTS”

One key character in the GAT test this year was Cara – the park ranger. Cara was tasked with assessing the amount of brush turkeys and dingoes, and whether the amount of dingoes affected the amount of brush turkeys. Who on Earth knows who came up with this idea, but, it led to many-a-meme.

This meme sees our boy Spiderman representing Cara, holding a ‘brush turkey detector’.

One component that really confused GAT participants was some weird ramble about this eccentric guy. No one understood what on Earth is was going on about, hence the prevalence of memes related to it.

Gotye x Pump IV by Destinie Rajaratnam

This one is a take on the popular Gotye song ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’

One question that took quite the strain on the less mathematical cohort of students was the section where pool pump start and finish times had to be calculated. Questions tested students on amounts of pumps on at one time, which proved itself to be quite difficult for some.

Will and Sal’s farming dilemma

The Will and Sal series of memes came from one set of questions where a prospective farmer named Will is keen to start a farm. He suggests the idea to his partner Sal, who immediately rejects the idea.

The fictional character, Will, now has a heap of Victorian students supporting his farm creation wishes. Poor, poor Will. Let him have his farm!

Abigail Allwood from NASA

One of the two major writing pieces in this year’s GAT was an informative piece about the planet Mars. Students were given a series of infographs, charts, facts and statistics about the possibility of living on Mars.

One part of the information given to students was an image of a NASA employee, Abigail Allwood. The Australian staffer for NASA is one of the key personnel involved in a future trip to NASA.

One student misread the information and wrote an entire creative piece on Allwood’s apparent affair with the “head of NASA.”
