Another day, another comic book TV series trailer being trashed online. Last week it was the turn of Marvel, when the ‘quality’ of CGI on show in the first She-Hulk teaser was mercilessly mocked. 

Now it’s DC facing the mockery after the trailer for Gotham Knights debuted. The CW series (it being on The CW should have been a harbinger of things to come) is about the next generation of heroes after Batman’s death.

It specifically follows Turner Hayes, Bruce Wayne’s adopted son, whose life is turned upside down when he gets framed for Batman’s murder. Alongside several children of Batman’s enemies, they’ll attempt to clear their names while also becoming Gotham City’s next generation of protectors.

While that premise has plenty of promise, the trailer has basically washed all hope away in one fell swoop. There are no atrocious digital effects this time, just lots of terrible acting and cringeworthy dialogue. It looks like a Gotham City version of Gossip Girl; in other words, it looks like The CW doing its usual thing.

Social media has unsurprisingly been having a lot of fun at the trailer’s expense. “I’m convinced Gotham Knights was made on a budget of 4 dollars and a 3D Printer,” a Twitter user wrote.

“CW needs to cancel Gotham Knights faster than they did the Powerpuff girls show,” someone demanded. “the gotham knights trailer is out here making me embarrassed to be a dc fan,” someone else admitted. “cw gotham knights is just riverdale but with batman characters,” was another astute observation. There’s no official date for Gotham Knights yet, although it’s expected to arrive in 2023. Judging by the first trailer, the producers might think about taking an extra year to retool the series.
