We had to double-check we weren’t being “punk’d”, as the kids of 2017 say whenever they encounter fake news, but an interview with CNet has revealed that the mysterious green code from the beginning of The Matrix is far from the mysterious, futuristic cyber-coding we assumed.

Simon Whiteley worked as a production designer on the film Matrix film, where he developed the striking, iconic imagery. The jumbled text isn’t quite as mysterious as believed, actually being a series of sushi recipes found in a bunch of old Japanese cookbooks.

Considering the film’s fanbase were more than a little obsessive, we’re surprised this hasn’t been revealed before

“Without that code, there is no Matrix”, Whiteley said mischievously, of the well-kept secret.
