A new batch of set leaks from filming on Wonka at Hertford College reveals that Hugh Grant will have a role in the film.
Wonka has been filming since back in October with Timothée Chalamet starring as the lead character, Willy Wonka himself. Over the course of the project’s production, actors such as Rowan Atkinson and Olvia Coleman have been added to the cast and now, thanks to set leaks coming from filming at Hertford College, it appears that Hugh Grant will be joining the cast.
Wonka which will cover the origin story of the famed candy-maker is described by WB as:
“the story of how young Willy Wonka comes to be a successful chocolatier. In the story of the film, Willy grows up in a gypsy caravan. His mother makes chocolate for his birthday and tells Willy that the world’s best chocolate is sold at the shops in the Palais Gourmet. It becomes Willy’s dream to sell chocolates made from his mother’s recipe in a shop there, and to share them with the world. However, one day he comes home to find his mother and other family members gone, and soldiers torching the caravan. He flees, and survives the war hidden under a magician’s shop. Willy’s dream to share his mother’s recipe for chocolates with the world is his primary goal in Wonka and propels the narrative.”
As the cast and crew arrived, staff and students described the scene as madness. Parts of Hertford College were being used to do make-up and dress members of the cast. Kirsten Fletcher, a student at the college, had a meeting relocated in order for Hugh Grant to use the location as a dressing room, which led to the belief that he is now part of the cast.
Fletcher also said that it was “a lot busier coming in and out of college.” Wang Sum Luk, another Hertford student, described fellow classmates being “yelled at to move out the way”. Many students at the college have reportedly taken to working in the quad area rather than their usual spot in the library for a chance to catch passing cast members.
Wonka is set to release on March 17th, 2023.
