Hwang Dong-Hyuk gives updates on ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 and teases new games for the hit show’s second season.
Squid Game‘s massive success on Netflix was a surprise to many, as the anti-capitalist hero’s journey tale took the streaming service by storm, becoming the most-watched Netflix show of all time. And with the first season ending on a cliffhanger on multiple fronts, many people had a burning question in their minds, “When will there be a Season?”
In an interview with Deadline on the red carpet at Saturday’s PGA Awards ceremony Hwang Dong-hyuk, creator of Squid Game, said that while there is nothing to see just yet in terms of what Season 2 will be about, he is working hard on ideas for the next season.
Dong-hyuk went on to give a brief tease for what we can expect, “There will be more great games, that’s all I can say.” Hwang said. “I’m just still brainstorming and collecting the ideas for Season 2. I haven’t even started with the writing yet.”
Deadline came back with a series of questions for the Squid Game creator, “Will there be flashbacks? Are those Season 1 characters gone forever? Can we expect to see some cast members coming back somehow?”
“No, because most of them are dead,” Hwang said while laughing. “I’ll try something to bring them back to Season 2.”
Hwang then gestured beside him to HoYeon Jung, who plays Kang Sau-byeok in Squid Game Season 1, saying, “Let’s say maybe she has a twin sister, you’ll see.”

HoYeon laughed at the prospect and brought up that she could get plastic surgery for the role, “I could change my hair color. Let’s do a little like plastic surgery.”
Deadline then asked Hwang if he was surprised by the show’s success, to which he responded, “Yeah in a way because who can expect this kind of success. I tried hard to make a successful show, but I never expected this much success. It’s a surprise.”
