Reboots, revivals and reunion shows are usually met with much excitement and anticipation. And of course, all the nostalgia. And now in an interesting turn of events for the iCarly reboot, this isn’t quite how the story has played out for them.
According to TMZ, the show is receiving a tonne of backlash online, with many viewers throwing accusations at the Nickelodeon reboot, accusing them of replacing Carly’s best friend, Sam Puckett. And not only are they mad that Carly has a new best friend in the show by the name of Harper, played by actress Laci Mosley, they’re angry at the fact that she’s black.
Many perceiving it as Paramount being guilty of ‘PC overcorrecting and/or pandering’. As reported by TMZ, one social media user shared, “did they seriously just do the whole Black bestfriend trope with ICarly??? Man f*** all of that.” Another said, “they really got a black girl tryna be sam on icarly…”
Many others have hit back at those slamming the show, reminding everybody that Jennette McCurdy actually quit acting, so therefore any comments accusing the show of replacing her don’t make any sense.
Not having a bar of it, Mosley took to social media to call out the hate she’s receiving, noting that she’s not here for any racist comments. The video is also available to view via TMZ.
She said, “Hi I’m Glen Harper on iCarly, I’m not replacing Sam, Jennette McCurdy is a very wonderful person, I’ve never met her, but it’s no shade. Get the fuck out of my comments with this fucking racist ass bullshit you will be blocked, and you will never see me again, honey.”
Since posting that video to her Instagram stories, she’s also called out the backlash which has been directed to her specifically in a post.
Paramount also took to Instagram to back in their show and Mosley, saying that they’re proud of their “diverse” cast and crew.
