Tragic news has broken that Australian fashion designer Carla Zampatti has died at the age of 78 following a horrific fall which occurred last week.

Zampatti was attending La Traviata opera on Sydney Harbour on Friday, March 26th when she fell and slipped on the bottom steps of the staircase. Zampatti reportedly went into a coma from the fall and was immediately rushed to hospital.

Her devastating passing was confirmed via a statement on social media today.

“It’s with great sadness that we announce the death of fashion icon Carla Zampatti AC today,” the post on her official Instagram account read.

“Carla is Australia’s most successful and enduring fashion designer, launching her eponymous label in 1965,” it continued.

“Carla has long been celebrated for making Australian women feel confident and elegant through her exceptional design, tailoring and understanding of the modern woman.

“A champion of Australian women and a multicultural success story, she continued to thrive as a businesswoman through enormous radical and social change, designing clothes for women fighting for liberation through the women’s rights movement in the 1960s to empowering women today in leadership, the workplace, in their home and at major life events.’

The post which was published at 12pm EST, has already been flooded with heartbreaking tributes from fellow Australian celebs and friends of Zampatti.

“A passionate and kind lady.. We are so lucky to have had her ❤️  We will miss you,” Danni Minogue commented on the Instagram post.

“Carla was a beautiful women in every sense. A true style icon and inspiration who will be missed by many🌹,” added Sonia Kruger.

“So incredibly saddened by this news. It’s been an honour to wear your iconic pieces across the years. A true superstar and innovator ahead of the times. You will be sorely missed CZ xx,” posted Erin Holland.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian tweeted her condolences: “The world will never be the same without Carla Zampatti. Talented, generous and inspiring. A true trailblazer in every respect. Rest In Peace.”

Speaking of the horrific fall, Opera Australia chief executive Rory Jeffes told The Sydney Morning Herald that staff looked after Ms Zampatti until an ambulance arrived on the scene.

“My understanding is that they just cared for her, she appeared to be in and out of consciousness and therefore they just made sure she was comfortable until the ambulance arrived,” he said.

Zampatti was a pioneer in the Australian fashion industry who launched her label Carla Zampatti in 1965. Her designs have graced the likes of Miranda Kerr, Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman and Princess Mary of Denmark.
