In what marked one of the last shows to be held at Newcastle’s iconic music venue, the Cambridge Hotel, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever and special guest Hatchie certainly gave punters a night to remember on their stop on Jack Daniel’s Make It Count Tour on March 16.

Joining the next stop of the tour was dream-pop sensation Hatchie, who took the stage took the stage of a fairly packed out main room at 8:30 pm as her waify, haunting vocals creepy through every crevice of the venue while she sang ‘This Enchanted’ from her latest album, Rooftops.

The energy began to build over the rest of her set until the entire room was packed out body to body as the critically-acclaimed artist wowed the crowd with the super pop-heavy “Lights On” and her very Cranberries-esque hit track “Sure”.

The mesmerising performance emphasised Hatchie’s uncanny ability to seamlessly blend an array of genres—from shoegaze to pop, and even industrial and trip-hop—creating a sonic experience that both she and the listener can get lost in.

Between performances, punters reminisced on their favourite Cambo memories, pointing at the seemingly infinite collection of signed drum skins covering the walls that had been signed by the likes of everyone from Bliss n Eso to Wolfmother.

The crowd was well and truly warmed up as Melbourne legends Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever took the stage, with many heading straight to the barrier as they rocked out to frontman Fran Keany who had the audience eating out of the palm of his hand.

Playing everything from the fan favourite “French Press” to newer hits like “The Way It Shatters”, the evening culminated with a wholesome and weighty encore as drummer Marcel Tussie emerged dressed full head to toe in a Woody costume – as he was celebrating his Bucks Party before his wedding this weekend.

Since the release of their debut EP Talk Tight back in 2015, the Melbourne-based rockers have been rampaging through stages across the globe with breakneck velocity.
