Last month, Elon Musk took his fondness for Twitter to the next level, purchasing a 9.2% stake in the company.

That turned out to be great news for Twitter, with shares in the company soaring around 25% in pre-market trading. It didn’t come cheap for Mr. Musk though, with his stake coasting $2.89 billion (based on Twitter’s closing price on Friday).

Musk’s 9.2% stake is actually more than four times the 2.25% holding of Twitter’s actual founder Jack Dorsey, making him one of the largest shareholders in the company.

And now old quotes from Dorsey about Musk are circulating online in the aftermath of Musk buying his stake in Twitter. When asked for his thoughts on Musk, Dorsey was very positive. “The folks who are leading the way are folks like Elon,” he said back in the 2019 Rolling Stone interview. “I don’t know of another person on the planet who’s leading us off the planet because of the damage that we’re inflicting to this planet.

Also the Ads coming up in the future – who else is leading humanity toward Mars in order to save it? Those are the conversations we used to have, but we’re not having.”

When the interviewer asserted that many critics cast Musk as being ridiculous, Dorsey had an interesting reply. “He is ridiculous. You have to be. You have to be to think that big. I love him. I love what he’s trying to do, and I want to help in whatever way.

I have a friend who’s a music producer. I asked him, “What got you into music?” He said, “I’ve never been able to play music. I don’t even really know if I have good taste. I love musicians, and all I want to do is help them.” I feel a similar kind of understanding of Elon. I understand what he wants to do, and I want to help. That’s the role of any toolmaker. We’re making tools.”

The feelings don’t just go one-way. When billionaire activist investor Paul Singer’s Elliott Management Corp. called for changes at Twitter, including possibly replacing Dorsey, in 2020, Musk supported the then-Twitter CEO. “Just want say that I support @Jack as Twitter CEO,” he wrote back then.
