Jameela Jamil has gone to bat for Jacinda Ardern in light of the vitriol she’s received after announcing her resignation as the prime minister of New Zealand.
News broke yesterday that Ardern will be stepping aside for a new leader no later than 7 February.
“The decision was my own,” Ardern said. “Leading a country is the most privileged job anyone could ever have, but also the most challenging. You cannot and should not do the job unless you have a full tank, plus a bit in reserve for those unplanned and unexpected challenges.”
“I no longer have enough in the tank to do the job justice,” she added.
While her decision was met with love and support from many New Zealanders and Australians, some threw harsh criticism Adern’s way.
A placard in Napier, New Zealand reads, “Ding dong the witch is gone,” in reference to Arderns departure. Meanwhile, The Freedom & Rights Coalition actually took credit for her resignation in a post on Facebook: “We can now celebrate the departure of this leader of division. We did it!”
Hollywood actor and activist Jameela Jamil has called out the backlash Ardern’s received and thrown her support behind the female prime minister.

She posted a screenshot of an article by BBC news titled, Jacinda Ardern resigns: Can women really have it all? She wrote in text on the picture, “Yeah women can have it all. She had it all, did it all, smashed it all, and now has even more because she has the agency to decide when she is done on HER time. She may not be prime minister anymore but she was always a queen.”
Jamil also captioned the photo, “5 years of being revolutionary, and leaving on her own terms. That IS having it all. Two old men in England resigned because they were so despised by the country and had FAILED so colossally.:. And no headlines from the BBC about “can Men really have it all?” The woman lead the only perfect pandemic response and is WELL OVERDUE a break. She’s handing over one of the only countries still intact over to someone else who hasn’t just carried a country through a Fucking 3 year global crisis.”
“Love her forever and ever amen.”
