Whatever you think of the eventual outcome, there’s one thing we can all agree on about the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial: it was a messy spectacle.
Like it or not, that also means it’s ideal documentary fodder. On Monday, September 19th, a two-part doc about Depp and Heard’s bitter defamation trial will arrive on Discovery+.
Titled Johnny vs Amber: The US Trial, it will provide interviews with Depp’s lawyers, journalists, and legal experts. Unseen footage shot as the trial took place will also be included.
According to Discovery+ (as per Radio Times), the doc will offer a “forensic account of the key evidence and turning points of the case from both sides, allowing viewers to make up their own minds about who to believe.”
It sounds like the doc is attempting to be impartial. The first episode will focus on Depp’s side of the story, with his team discussing his abusive childhood and drug issues. The second episode will look at Heard’s account, detailing her allegations against her former partner and her treatment by people on social media.
The series will reveal “in graphic detail the struggles inside the dysfunctional and turbulent A-list marriage,” with Discovery+ describing Heard as “the woman the world chose to hate, but who kept on fighting”.
After a long and intense trial, the jury (some jurors reportedly fell asleep during the trial) eventually sided with Johnny Depp, with the actor being awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. Heard, meanwhile, was given a comparatively paltry $2 million for her counterclaim against the Pirates of the Caribbean actor.
