In the world of Kendall Jenner, she definitely would have been anticipating this week with loads of excitement. She was launching her very own tequila brand after all!

After plugging the brand across socials in a hype-building lead-up, 818 Tequila seemed like it was going to be a pretty solid product. But somehow, once again, she’s done fucked up.

Following the 2018 outrage of the Pepsi commercial advertisement, where somehow herself and her team thought it would be a good idea to walk up to a cop at a protest, hand him a can of Pepsi and solve all of the world’s problems.

As it was put in a tweet by @travon, it was a “perfect example of what happens when there’s no black people in the room when decisions are being made.” And now in 2021, it looks like Jenner has implemented none of the lessons she’s learned into her new venture with 818 Tequila.

To launch the distilled beverage, Jenner took to Instagram to share a range of ads in which she’s seen parading around agave fields, drinking tequila with the local natives, which she pulled up to on a pickup truck and then on a horse…

So what exactly is the internet raging at? Well, it seems that Jenner is appropriating the Mexican culture ‘fOr The AeSthEtic’. To put it plain and simply, she’s just doing too much.

Let’s take a look at Dwayne “The Rock” Johnnson’s plugging Instagram post for his tequila brand, Tere Mana. Besides, the uniform denim shirts, there isn’t too much to critique here. Right?

It should be noted that while none of the celebrities who own their own tequila brands (including George Clooney, LeBron James and Kevin Hart – according to TMZ, just to name a few) received much backlash for the tequila endeavours – if any at all.

Is that because none of them paraded around agave fields in a pickup truck in a bid to ‘advertise’ their product? If Jenner didn’t do this, would she still receive the same backlash? I guess now we’ll never know.

The disconnect between commercialism and reality is at an all-time high here. All in all, cultural appropriation has no place in the world. And unfortunately Jenner seems to somehow think there is. Thanks, but no thanks.
