The Borderlands movie was never the best idea to start with, but getting Kevin Hart onboard in one of the leading roles is just a baffling casting decision.

After stating (correctly) that Monster Hunter will continue the trend of bad video game movies, it looks like the next project to carry that dubious torch is Borderlands.

But while there’s still a way to go before the Borderlands movie becomes a reality, the casting choices leave much to be desired. Hell, one wonders if the movie will even get near the somewhat satisfactory benchmark, let alone good.

After somehow nabbing the ridiculously talented Cate Blanchett to play the leading role of Lilith, The Hollywood Reporter reports that Kevin Hart has been cast in the leading role of Roland.

Now this isn’t Hart’s first foray into a video game movie as he’s done those surprisingly enjoyable Jumanjsequels, but casting him as Roland is baffling to say the least because the character is literally the opposite of Hart.

Roland is a tall and physically imposing soldier who is equal parts noble and inspirational to the downtrodden. Hart is the opposite of tall, definitely not physically imposing, and is best known for playing comedic characters who play jump rope between being insufferable and downright annoying.

If anything, Kevin Hart is more suited to playing the character of Salvador, who is Borderlands‘ resident angry short bloke who wields a couple of massive guns.

Having been a longtime fan of Borderlands, this the casting choices (with the exception of Cate Blanchett) and decision to have Eli Roth of all people direct doesn’t exactly fill me with hope that the movie adaptation will be any good.

But having said that, it’s way to early to say anything so it’s best I withhold judgement on this movie until we get closer to its release date. For all I know, Kevin Hart could be the best part of this movie so we’ll just have to wait and see.
