The official trailer for the Monster Hunter movie is here and, well, it’s something.

Back in 2016 when it was announced that Hollywood was making a movie about Capcom’s popular RPG series, Monster Hunter, the collective reaction from video game fans was, “oh gawd no.”

It seems like a bit of a premature knee-jerk reaction to something that was years away, but that concern is backed up with data.

Ever since video game movies became a thing, there has never been one that’s considered “good.” Of the many, many that have been released, only two received enough positive reviews to scrape over the ‘Fresh’ threshold on Rotten Tomatoes – Detective Pikachu and Sonic The Hedgehog.

So going back to Monster Hunter, the first official trailer has finally arrived and… it just does not look good, y’all.

Expectations for movie were already at a low given it is directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, the bloke responsible for the awful Resident Evil films not the guy who made brilliant movies like There Will Be Blood and Boogie Nights.

But hoo boy did the trailer drag expectations for the film adaptation down even lower than it was before.

Rather than going with Monster Hunter‘s fantasy setting with swords and magic, the film uses a modern day setting featuring U.S marines taking down giant monsters using assault rifles and rocket launchers.

The fantasy setting would not have translated well to the big screen anyway, but the modern soldier setting with monsters turns Monster Hunter into an even dumber big monster movie than it was already shaping up to be.

Maybe we’re being too harsh on it and Monster Hunter may surprise us. Or maybe it won’t.

Either way, we’ll know when the film comes out in December 2020 (provided that it doesn’t get delayed).
