A new patch has arrived for The Last Of Us: Remastered and it’s all but made loading times a thing of the past.

The Last Of Us: Remastered has been out on the PS4 for several years now, yet the game still finds ways to surprise people. In this case though, it’s less about its excellent storytelling and more about its loading times.

More specifically, the lack thereof.

Sony has quietly updating several PS4 games in recent weeks, reportedly with a new compression system in preparation for the backwards compatibility feature on the upcoming PS5, and these updates have had a dramatic effect on the loading times on several titles.

Regarding The Last Of Us specifically, YouTuber EIAnalistaDeBits made a comparison video of the game before and after the patch and the change is dramatic.

Whereas the initial loading screen for the 2013 masterpiece would take well over a minute to load, the new patch has reduced that duration to under 14 seconds.

No matter how you look at it, that’s a huge drop and those precious seconds add up to a lot when you keep having to reload saves because you suck at games (like me).

It’s not just The Last Of Us: Remastered that’s been buffed by these supposed PS5 patches either.

Others have noted first-party PS4 titles like 2018’s God Of War has also seen its loading times reduced (via Eurogamer), and other games like Until Dawn on the PS4 has had its loading screens essentially removed.

Given how the main selling point of the new PS5 is its ridiculously fast loading times, the retroactive reduction of these times in older PS4 games makes one wonder what Sony has in store for its new console when it finally drops in November.

Maybe this will make unskippable ads a thing of the past.
