Generally, any advertisement shown at the Super Bowl tends to get a lot of eyes on it. However, the first teaser trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which debuted at the event, managed to take this to new heights, racking up 257 Million online views worldwide in first 24 hours of its release.
Amazon has confirmed to The Brag that the trailer for the hugely anticipated series subtitled The Rings of Power set a new record for the most-watched premiere of an entertainment trailer (film, tv and streaming) of all-time in that time frame, among trailers that have debuted during a Super Bowl telecast.
Speaking of the trailer’s popularity, Ukonwa Ojo, chief marketing officer of Prime Video and Amazon Studios, said, “The response to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been immense. In introducing the upcoming series to viewers, our goal has been to ensure we are positioned at the epicenter of pop culture while remaining true to the Tolkien universe.
She added: “It’s been incredible to see the amazing reaction to each marketing beat that we unveiled over the past month. By inviting audiences to slowly get familiar with this exciting new chapter in the franchise, we have seen their excitement and insatiable appetite for more build at a feverish pace. The Super Bowl was always designed as the ultimate payoff for fans; a teaser of this magnitude deserved to be debuted during the biggest annual television and sports event of the year. This record-breaking achievement belongs to our fans, and we look forward to continuing to take them on an incredible journey leading up to the fall debut.”
While the hype around the new series is huge, it’s not scheduled to debut on Amazon Prime until 2nd September 2022. The series is expected to be the most expensive show ever made, with The Hollywood Reporter confirming that the first season of the show has cost the streaming platform around $450 million (approximately $630 million AUD).
“What I can tell you is Amazon is going to spend about $650 million [New Zealand dollars] in season one alone,” New Zealand’s Minister for Economic Development and Tourism, Stuart Nash, told Morning Report. “This is fantastic, it really is… this will be the largest television series ever made.”
