Mariah Carey is the only popular artist over the past forty years to have written and delivered what has become a holiday standard – the unassailable ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’. Go on, think of another.

She isn’t content to rest on her holiday laurels though, releasing a follow up Christmas album in 2010, and now doubling down by delivering the piano-led holiday tune ‘The Star’.

The song is the title track for an animated family film due in November based around the birth of Jesus (the one from the Bible), with voices provided by Oprah Winfrey, Kelly Clarkson, Tracy Morgan, and Keegan-Michael Key.

As for the song itself… well, it’s sweet, and catchy – its successful will no doubt rely heavily on that of the film, but it’s hardly going to be blasted out of malls annually from early November. Then again, soundtracks for animated films are big business, so who knows?

Carey’s real kids also feature on the single; the moment they join her on the chorus is adorable.
