McDonald’s is finally caving into the demands of the swathes of vegans hankering for a 2 am feed — the fast-food giant is set to introduce a line of plant-based alternatives, the McPlant, in 2021.

This isn’t a half pai attempt at a plant-based alternative. Maccas are going the full month and teaming up with cult Los Angeles-based plant-based kings Beyond Meat.

“Beyond Meat and McDonald’s co-created the plant-based patty which will be available as part of their McPlant platform,” a Beyond Meat spokesperson said in an email.

I didn’t think anything could ever tear me away from my allegiance to the Hungry Jacks Rebel Whopper. However, the prospect of noshing down on one of Beyond Meat’s sumptuous, bleeding patties has proved that the heart is forever fickle.

The announcement that McDonald’s were planning on venturing to the vegan realm caused a real schism in the stock market. Maccas didn’t divulge that they had developed the McPlant range with another company. This uncertainty caused the share price of Beyond Meat, one of the leading producers plant-based products, to plummet by around eight per cent.

This prompted a spokesperson from Beyond Meat to clarify that the McPlant was a joint venture, in partnership with McDonald’s. Following this announcement, the share price bounced back by four per cent.

This isn’t the first time McDonald’s has collaborated with Beyond Meat. Last year, the P.L.T. (plant-lettuce-tomato) was introduced to Canada’s menu for a limited time.
