Legally Blonde is not exactly the movie-to-video-game crossover anybody expected, but it’s due to arrive later this year.

Here’s some unexpected news to kick off your day. Remember Legally Blonde? You know, the film where a fashionable sorority queen is dumped by her boyfriend only to decide to go to law school and crush it?

Well it turns out that PlaySide Studios, a Melbourne-based video game developer, has partnered up with Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios (MGM) to develop and publish a game based on the series.

You’re probably confused. I get it, so let’s back up.

The news comes courtesy of Venturebeat (via GamesRadar+) who confirms that the game will be a free-to-play title available on both iOS and Android mobile devices. At least it means you don’t have to worry about nabbing a PS5 for it.

It makes sense for Playside, who although has gone largely unnoticed, has been operating since 2011. The team is now more than 100 strong, and has published 52 titles, which is bloody impressive.

Don’t remember ‘Legally Blonde’. Check out the trailer below:

But why now? As luck would have it the original Legally Blonde is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and is still beloved around the world. The Legally Blonde musical is touring Australia, for example, and a third movie is set to release in 2022.

The mobile game will based around both the original 2001 film as well as its sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde.

According to an interview with Playside’s vice president of development, TJ Munusamy,  the studio has a good relationship with MGM and staff love the franchise.

“It’s about women’s empowerment,” Munusamy said. “She’s smart, savvy, and has a sophisticated side. It’s one of those films that’s a classic. And mobile free-to-play has been our bread and butter.”

Production has only just started but the studio expect the finished game to launch later in 2021.
