Gameplay footage for the upcoming Marvel’s Midnight Suns has finally been revealed, but some fans aren’t happy with what they see.

Last week during gamescom: Opening Night Live, 2K debuted its crack at the superhero bandwagon with a trailer for Marvel’s Midnight Suns. It was big, bold and set tongues absolutely wagging.

Now, the developer behind the title, Firaxis Games, has released some footage of what fans can come to expect in moment-to-moment gameplay, and unfortunately it looks as though some people are already disappointed.

In Marvel’s Midnight Suns you’ll be taking on the role of the Hunter – a hero brought back to life in order to lead the titular Midnight Suns. The group is a real who’s who of Marvel lore, including the likes of Blade, Ghost Rider, Iron Man, and everybody’s favourite yellow-spandex wearer, Wolverine. The resurrection is all in the hopes of overcoming Lilith, Mother of Demons and parent to the Hunter. Talk about family issues…

But although it sounds like we’re setting the stage for a bombastic action game similar to hits like Miles Morales, Midnight Suns is actually a tactical, turn-based RPG. It makes sense considering the team behind the project is also well-known for the beloved Civilization series.

Watch the gameplay reveal for Marvel’s Midnight Suns below:

“It was incredibly important to us to build something the gaming world has never seen before,” stated Garth DeAngelis, Senior Franchise Producer at Firaxis Games. “In Marvel’s Midnight Suns, you aren’t just saving the world with heroic combat – you’re living alongside and befriending Marvel legends, engaging in an incredibly deep story, all the while making interesting decisions befitting of timeless Firaxis gameplay.”

“With all these heroes from across the Avengers, X-Men, Runaways, and more – this is a particularly interesting and diverse group of heroes who don’t always see eye-to-eye,” adds in Chad Rocco, Director of Narrative at Firaxis Games. “As the Hunter, it will be up to you to help bridge the gap between the old guard and the new kids on the block.”

Needless to say, despite knowing the game was going to focus on strategy over spectacle, fans have not reacted kindly.

Brutal.

We, on the other hand, are choosing to stay optimistic until we get our hands on the real thing. After all, variety is the spice of life, right?

Marvel‘s Midnight Suns will launch in March 2022 and will be available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, XBO, Switch and PC.
