Online streaming service Netflix has just ended the HBO Network’s 17-year streak of being the most nominated network in television at the Emmy Awards, with their whopping 122 nominations.
As expected, Game Of Thrones was the most nominated, clipping another 22 noms to it’s already weighty belt.
However, a number of popular Netflix originals received multiple noms, including Stranger Things (12) and GLOW (3) and Black Mirror (4). Historical drama The Crown cleaned up as well, collecting 13 nominations for its second season, as well as heartwarming masterpiece Queer Eye earning 4.
Recent reports have indicated that Netflix could spend anywhere from $8 billion to $13 billion on content this year alone. Considering they recently acquired the title of “world’s most valuable media company”, it’s unsurprising that they have no intentions of slowing down.
It’s unsure whether Netflix will take home the most wins however, as HBO also holds a 16-year streak for most Emmy’s won. As the two networks battle it out for the next round of award show trophies, the discussion of online streaming vs traditional television rages on as networks across the world fight for viewership.
