Holy shit! The camera on new Huawei phone is actually fucking incredible, and a goddamn Getty photographer – the Creative Director to be precise – is even losing his mind over it.

Let’s get a glaringly obvious confession out of the way first. I personally know zilch about phone technologies, or cameras for that matter, and the Huawei brand was on my radar about as much as the latest smart watch, or smart shoe, or smart whatever.

Having just taken the new Huawei P30 and P30 Pro for a tour around Uluru, I am truly sorry for my ignorance.

James D. Morgan – Getty Creative Director (who’s photographed The Royals, Richard Branson, Obama, and Oprah) did his own comparison on two different devices. Using Pro mode, which is great for dictating what you want to do, from shutter speed to aperture, Morgan said the difference was palpable.

“For me personally I always want to see the comparison,” he said during an information seminar at Ayers Rock. “[…] There is a very distinct difference in all the elements; of the richness of the colour, the depth of field, the clarity fo the shot. It’s very, very different.”

I was stunned when I, a mere amateur at both photography and new technologies, took the camera for a spin around the sacred Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

Check out this photo I took of the red sand near Uluru on my device, and the one I took with the Huawei P30:

I even captured the immersive installation by internationally acclaimed artist Bruce Munro, Field of Light, without completely stuffing it up.

I need to stress here that the photo was taken in very dark light, with no flash, in the middle of the desert. Something practically unheard of for any mobile phone.

Other than the fact that its SuperSpectrum Sensor for low-light video capture makes night scenes bright and highly detailed (without the embarrassing flash), there’s a bunch of tech-savvy reasons why I, the Ralph Wiggum of photography, took such great pics.

  • 5X optical zoom on the Huawei P30 Pro incorporates a periscope system that is stabilised both optically and using AI
  • A SuperZoom Lens on the Huawei P30 Pro which supports 5 times optical zoom, 10 times hybrid zoom and 50 times digital zoom (someone zoomed in on the moon like it was nothing)
