Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) has played host to some incredible, world-class exhibitions over the years, bringing international (and local) culture and history to our humble city.
And now the NGV is set to help bring some of fashion’s most crucial history and one of its most influential and seminal designers, Coco Chanel to centre stage with Gabrielle Chanel: Fashion Manifesto.
The exhibition has been made possible thanks to Paris’s leading fashion museum, the Palais Galliera, as per Time Out and marks the first ever exhibition in Australia to purely focus on Chanel’s fashion.
The Palais Galliera first launched the exhibition back in 2020.
This news is a big deal, as according to Time Out, Melbourne is the first city outside of France to play host to the exhibit.
The exhibition is set to present north of 100 Chanel garments direct from the gallery in Paris, as well as from Patrimoine de Chanel (Chanel’s own archives), as well additional public and private collections.
In addition, the NGV will also reportedly be contributing to the gallery, dipping into its own archives to bring never-before-seen pieces to the forefront, including a white lace evening dress from 1993 and a red silk velvet dress from 1923.
This exhibition is a must-see for all fashion lovers, particularly as Chanel’s influence on fashion continues to be as omnipresent as ever, not to mention reigning supreme as one of fashion’s most coveted brands today.
Tickets are on sale right now, with the gallery available to the public from December 5th this year through until April 25h.
