This New Year’s Day, Nic Cage is bursting back into cinemas (and our dreams) in the upcoming A24 film Dream Scenario.

Following a long list of hits in 2023 with Priscilla, The Iron Claw, and Beau Is Afraid – A24 is starting 2024 with a bang and releasing Nic Cage back into the wild for a film that sees everyone on Earth dreaming about our favourite actor.

As detailed on IMDB, Dream Scenario follows Paul Matthews (Cage), when his life is turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams. His nighttime appearances take a nightmarish turn and Paul is forced to navigate his newfound stardom.

What compelled Nicolas Cage was the lack of control Paul feels, when he finds overnight fame. Cage felt a deep connection between this and his experience as an internet meme.

“I remember feeling no sense of control over what was happening to me on the internet,” Cage confessed to Collider. “All that stuff turned into a memeification. Cherry-picking freak-out scenes and meltdowns without any sense.”

“It wasn’t until I read Dream Scenario that I said to myself, now I can take those feelings and apply them to something constructive.”

Despite the eye-opening commentary behind the film, the reviews have been nothing short of hilarious.

“Nicolas Cage farts and cums and farts. Masterpiece,” writes Letterboxd reviewer, Jay. “A Nightmare on Meme Street,” jokes another, referring to the cult classic horror series Nightmare on Elm Street, which saw the villain lurking in people’s dreams.

“My apologies to the guy who moved over to the other side of the theatre cuz I was laughing too hard.”

“The movie isn’t just about memes; it is a meme,” said Nick Allen from RogerEbert.com
