Nintendo might be working on something big for The Legend of Zelda if rumours around new trademark approvals are to be believed.
As first discovered by Twitter user @KeliosFR, known to tease new and important Nintendo information in the past. They revealed that trademarks have been accepted in Australia for Phantom Hourglass and The Wind Waker, two Legend of Zelda titles. It means a new game in the series could be coming to the Nintendo Switch much sooner than fans anticipated.
It also comes after a trademark was filed for Ocarina of Time back in August of last year, which originally got people aflutter about the idea of a remastered Zelda collection.
That news immediately got gamers excited, thinking that there might be plans for these to coincide with Zelda’s momentous 35th anniversary, due to take place this year.
It wouldn’t be the first time Nintendo had pulled such a move: to mark their beloved Mario’s 35th anniversary in 2020, they re-released the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection.
If that’s not enough, it’s Pokémon’s 25th anniversary in 2021, with rumours already circling that a new Let’s Go game is in the works. And if that still wasn’t enough, it’s also the 40th anniversary of big ol’ Donkey Kong.
The Wind Waker was originally a Nintendo GameCube title in 2002, and was later remastered for the Wii U, as per Game Rant. Phantom Hourglass started out on the Nintendo DS in 2007 and was given a Wii U digital port a few years afterwards.

The news should be taken with a pinch of salt as there’s lots left unanswered. Why was the trademark filed only in Australia of all places? How would the core mechanics of Phantom Hourglass, which relied on the DS touch screen, transfer over to a Switch? Only time will tell.
There’s currently no official announcement from Nintendo yet, but it’s still enticing news for the legions of Zelda fans. Be prepared for a big year for the iconic video game series in some capacity.
