According to the president of Nintendo, the company is committed to creating some brand new IP and characters to fall in love with.

Just in case you’re sick of the constant repetition of Mario and Zelda titles, it seems as though Nintendo feels your pain. During an interview with Nikkei (via VGC), Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa promised that more fresh ideas are on the way.

“With the expansion of time spent at home, the range of ‘entertainment’ as an object of consumption is expanding,” the president said.

“Games are not a necessity of life. In order for customers to choose games in their finite time, they have to be interesting. Competition is tough, and I am not optimistic.

“I myself am looking at and studying various forms of entertainment. In the future, we will focus on creating new game series as well as long-sellers such as Mario and Zelda.”

If you’re a long-time Nintendo fan, these comments about new IP signal a positive change for the future of the company. Since the Switch launched in 2017, Nintendo has stuck pretty closely to its established roster of heroes – the proverbial cash cows, if you will. Only the multiplayer focused Splatoon 2 and zany fighter Arms really tested the waters.

That said, from the sounds of it you’re still going to get plenty more Mario and Zelda, especially as the latter series celebrates its 35th birthday.

Regardless, the news could perfectly align with the long-rumoured update to the Nintendo Switch. While absolutely not confirmed, the Switch Pro is said to be touting a pretty swish OLED display and will allow 4K output to newer television sets.
