Peggy Lipton, the actress and singer best known for her role in Twin Peaks and The Mod Squad has passed away. Lipton was 72.
Her death was announced on Saturday by daughters Kidada and Rashida Jones. Lipton was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2004 and died of complications from her battle with the disease.
“She made her journey peacefully with her daughters and nieces by her side,” Her daughters shared in a statement to the Los Angeles Times. “We feel so lucky for every moment we spent with her. We can’t put all of our feelings into words right now, but we will say: Peggy was and will always be our beacon of light, both in this world and beyond. She will always be a part of us.”
Peggy Lipton was born in New York City in 1946. Her career started in modeling at the age of 15. In 1968, Lipton was cast as Julie Barnes in ABC’s The Mod Squad, which earned her four Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe Awards. In 1990, Lipton landed the role of the beloved Norma Jennings in ABC’s Twin Peaks. Lipton would go on to reprise the role of Jennings in Showtime’s 2017 revival.
Her role in The Mod Squad propelled Lipton to “it girl” status. A label she told the LA Times in 1993 she wasn’t a comfortable with.
“Fame really drove me into my house. I was very paranoid. I didn’t like going out. I had no idea how to be comfortable with the press. I was very young. It was really hard for me,” Lipton said.
In 1974, Lipton married record producer Quincy Jones. The pair had two daughters, Kidada and Rashida. They divorced in 1990.
