Because isolation during a global pandemic isn’t already hard enough, people have begun smashing their TVs in an effort to protest what they call “propaganda” and “false news” reported by the media.

Isolation has brought on the perfect era for me to watch as much Netflix and Stan as my NBN connection can possibly stream. My television has become a comfort, bringing multiple people into my house while still obeying social distancing regulations, and has provided me with an escape from all the wild things going on in the world.

However, many people have taken to watching nothing but the news on their televisions. Day in and day out, the media has continued to update us on the COVID-19 global pandemic – new cases, new restrictions, how we’ll fare through it all, et cetera.

Now, I won’t lie and say it’s not mundane, and it can be downright depressing, but many esteemed media outlets are doing their best to inform us of all the constant news that’s happening world wide.

With this constant stream of media, some people are just not happy about it, and have decided to protest the constant COVID-19 coverage by smashing their TVs. Yes, you read that right. Instead of simply turning off the telly, people have taken to making a public statement by destroying their TVs.

“Mainstream media, you are the virus,” one protestor shouts, “I will watch and listen to you no longer.” Another, with his television hoisted above his head states, “As for the media, I’ve got a message for ya – here’s my fucking message: no longer will we be programmed,” before bringing his telly bouldering to the ground.

In a compilation video, an outstanding amount of people destroy their only source of good entertainment by using axes, baseball bats, hammers, and even guns and spears.

“No longer will we be programmed by our TV programs,” another shouts, while one takes to calling up others by saying, “divided we fall, united we stand. Wake the fuck up, Australia.”

The main cry of the people is that media has taken to using scare tactics throughout their reporting of COVID-19, resulting in false news being spread. Although we definitely hear them loud and clear (well, mostly because they’re shouting), maybe they’d be better off just watching a sitcom, or something.

Never in my life would I dream of taking a hammer or brick to the screen of my telly just because I didn’t like what was being reported on the news. You know what I’d do? I’d simply change the channel instead of smashing something I’ve spent my hard-earned dollars on.
