There’s a growing petition for the upcoming Super Bowl to host a SpongeBob SquarePants tribute, with over one million people showing their support.
Back in November, the world was shocked to learn of the death of Stephen Hillenburg, famed for his work in marine biology and for being the creator of beloved cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants.
Understandably, countless tributes have been made for the late cartoonist, with fans, contemporaries, and other public figures lamenting this loss. However, one fan recently figured there should be a sizeable memorial made in Hillenburg’s name.
As Complex reports, fan Israel Colunga began an online petition last month, calling for the NFL to honour Stephen Hillenburg during the Super Bowl halftime show in February.
“As a tribute to his legacy, his contributions to a generation of children, and to truly showcase the greatness of this song, we call for ‘Sweet Victory’ to be performed at the Halftime Show,” the petition reads.
For those who aren’t too well-versed in the world of SpongeBob SquarePants, the song ‘Sweet Victory’ comes from a the 2001 episode ‘Band Geeks’, which sees the characters forming a marching band. Eventually, these shenanigans result in the band performing at the Bubble Bowl, where David Glen Eisley’s ‘Sweet Victory’ is debuted.
At the current time, the petition has attracted over 1,050,860, well on its way to the goal of 1,500,000. Of course, just because the petition might reach its goal, doesn’t mean the NFL are in any way required to honour its request.
However, given the recent troubles the Super Bowl has had in regards to its halftime entertainment, a SpongeBob SquarePants tribute might just be the answer.
As Tone Deaf recently discussed, pop-rockers Maroon 5 have reportedly been tapped to play the high-profile slot, though neither the band or the NFL have actually confirmed this decision.
However, the NFL had been having a lot of trouble finding a band to play, with big-name performers such as Rihanna and Pink initially turning down the spot, not wanting to be associated with the NFL following their blacklisting of Colin Kaepernick in response to his divisive protest against police brutality.
Now, it seems that Maroon 5 are having a hard time finding any guests to perform alongside them. Maybe it’s about time they recruited David Glen Eisley to perform his classic track ‘Sweet Victory’?
