After sending the world crazy over Pokémon GO, its creators are now working on a ‘Pikmin’ mobile game focused on ‘fun walking experiences’.

When Pokémon GO launched back in 2016, the world lost its collective shit. Case in point: the phenomenon lead to billions in damages. Big yikes.

But while that buzz has long since settled, the team behind the whole thing, Niantic, has announced its next project. The developer is once again pairing up with Nintendo for a new augmented reality mobile game focused on Pikmin.

Thankfully things seem a lot more peaceful this time around.

What’s a Pikmin? Created during the GameCube era, they’re essentially intelligent plant-animal hybrids that are great at following directions. Adorable, but also a little bit creepy if you ask us.

“As we continue to expand our games portfolio, it was a natural next step to team up with Nintendo,” said John Hanke, CEO of Niantic. “We’re looking forward to shaping the future of AR together, bringing Nintendo’s beloved game characters to life for mobile game players around the world.”

While details are still scarce, like Pokémon GO, this new app will demand that you get up off your arse to explore your surroundings. In particular, the team are trying their hand at creating ‘fun walking experiences.’ What exactly that means is anybody’s guess right now.

Learn the history of Pikmin below:

“Niantic’s AR technology has made it possible for us to experience the world as if Pikmin are secretly living all around us”, said Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director, Fellow, Nintendo. “Based on the theme of making walking fun, our mission is to provide people a new experience that’s different from traditional games. We hope that the Pikmin and this app will become a partner in your life.”

The game has a vague ‘2021’ release date at the moment, but will launch on iOS and Android. If you’re interested you can register to become an early tester on the game’s official site.
