If you own a PS3, PS Vita or PSP, PlayStation is about to ruin your day after the company announced it’s shutting down all three digital stores.

Sad news for PlayStation lovers. While PS5 and PS4 owners are enjoying a bunch of free games, Sony has confirmed that it will be shutting down the PlayStation Store for its PlayStation 3, PSP and PS Vita for good in just a few months. PS3 and PSP owners will have until July 2, 2021, while Vita owners won’t be locked out until August 27, 2021.

To explain: that means gamers will no longer have access to buy new games digitally for any of those systems after that date. However if you already own digital games, you will still be able to re-download them to your machine with no issue.

It’s a real shame for nostalgia fans or anybody still content with their trusty classic systems, but it’s not all bad news bears. The vast majority of mainstream titles for all three consoles released on physical discs/cartridges, so a quick browse of your local EB Games or eBay will hopefully nab you what you’re after.

For smaller indie titles, on the other hand, it’s a real blow that will see many efforts lost to the ether of time.

The rumour of the PlayStation stores closing has been circulating for a little while now, but a recent email sent to PlayStation customers sealed the deal. According to IGN the email claims the move is “an effort to focus our resources for PlayStation Store on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, which will enable us to enhance the customer experience even further. We thank you for your support on these platforms throughout the years.”

Does that mean Sony will have increased manpower to start producing more PS5s? We can only bloody hope so.
