Stop the press: Qantas is giving away a year’s worth of unlimited free travel to ten lucky families who get vaccinated against COVID-19.
That’s right, CEO Alan Joyce has unveiled the airline’s vaccine incentive program, which officially launches in July.
“We are looking at giving 1000 points flight vouchers, credits and we are going to offer ten mega prizes, at least one for each state and territory, where a family of four get unlimited travel on the Qantas and Jetstar network, anywhere in the network for a year,” Joyce told Today (via 9News).
Joyce went on to confirm that the airline is also working with hotel business Accor Group, which will provide a million points and free accommodation to the winning families.
“We are trying our best to help with this rollout – it will be retrospective and will include anyone who has already been vaccinated and will apply to anybody that is vaccinated until the end of 2021,” he said.
The aim of the program is to encourage more Australians to come forward to receive the COVID-19 vaccine as it becomes available to them.
Meanwhile, Joyce also revealed that Qantas plans to resume international flights by the end of the year with the help of a government “support package”.
“I’m hopeful by the time we get to July-August we will have some certainty on which markets will open and when they will open, so we can give certainty to our travelling public and to our people about when they are going to be back at work,” he said.
Although international borders may still be closed, Joyce said that several new domestic flight routes have helped increase demand for travel within Australia.
“Amazingly in the last six months Qantas has actually started 45 new domestic routes because demand is so different from what it was pre-COVID,” he said.
“People just want to get out there and travel. We are trying new things in order to facilitate that travel.”
