Game of Thrones won 58 Emmy Awards before coming to an end in 2019. That’s nearly one for every episode. It was also the most talked about show on television for much of the 2010s. So who would you be in Game of Thrones?
Game of Thrones launched in 2011. Based on George R. R. Martin’s ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, the program ran for eight seasons on HBO. While the majority was filmed in Northern Ireland and other parts of the UK – as well as Croatia, Malta and Spain – it’s chiefly set on the fictional continent of Wetseros.
Wetseros is a long and thin island continent, roughly the size of South America. Game of Thrones’ other main location is the continent of Essos, which has a land area equivalent to Eurasia.
Games of Thrones is a violent affair, with the noble families of the Seven Kingdoms fighting for control of the Iron Throne. A lot of characters die, but the brutality is softened by the show’s fantasy component. Magic is a feature, though it’s not as prevalent as in many other modern fantasy tales. Martin’s fondness for dragons does play a big part, though.
There are a bucketload of characters in Game of Thrones, which follows several different story arcs across its various continents and unwieldy oceans. Due to the show’s global popularity, the recurring cast members became some of television’s highest paid stars over the eight year run.
The central characters include Jaime, Cersei and Tyrion Lannister, as well as various less prominent Lannisters such as Tywin, Lancel, Kevan and Altan. Then there are the Starks – Ned, Catelyn, Sansa, Arya, Robb and Bran.
Among the series’ most popular characters is Daenerys Targaryen, portrayed by British actor Emilia Clark. She’s one of the last surviving members of the house of Targaryen, who’d previously occupied the Iron Throne for centuries.
