1.The First Record I Bought
Technically it was probably something like Bert And Ernie’s Sesame Street Classics, but you know, for the benefit of your readers I think The Beatles’ Let It Be might have been the first vinyl I bought as a wee tacker.
2.The Last Record I Bought
I just bought all four of The Budos Band albums. Love that shit. Daptone gold. Beautiful recordings with amazing arrangements and performances.
3.The First Thing I Recorded
I used to make crappy recordings on my tape deck at home, which happened to have a mic input. I didn’t have a microphone back then so I used a bent-back set of headphones to do the trick. Shitty little songs but I got to hear where I was going wrong pretty early on!
4.The Last Thing I Recorded
The last thing Dallas Crane recorded was a song called ‘Cheyenne’, which only just got left off last year’s Scoundrels album. It was one of the first songs Pete [Satchell] and I worked on when we decided to make a new Dallas record a couple of years back, and we always liked it but just didn’t have it in good enough shape for the album. We got to live out our ‘guitarmonies’ dream with big, rosy chorus vocals to boot.
5.The Record That Changed My Life
It’s hard to isolate one album. Sgt. Pepper and Born To Run got me through my childhood. Appetite For Destruction and The Cult’s Electric and Nirvana’s Nevermind got me through the teens. Tom Waits’ Rain Dogs, Captain Beefheart’s Safe As Milk, Television’s Marquee Moon, the Wipers’ Over The Edge – things like that drove the Dallas thing. It’s impossible to name one I’m afraid. All were kind of life-changers.
