Ricky Gervais today revealed that, as a writer, he is proudest of his most recent show, After Life. Gervais created, wrote and starred in the series, which premiered on Netflix in March last year. His previous creative endeavours include the hit TV shows Extras, The Office, An Idiot Abroad, Life’s Too Short and Derek.
But in a recent Tweet, Gervais revealed that his most recent work may just have pipped the others to the post.
“Nearly impossible to say. Might just be AfterLife by a whisker,” he tweeted when asked which of his shows he is most proud of as a writer.

After Life differs significantly from the majority of Gervais’ work. While the cringeworthy capers of deluded David Brent first earned Gervais acclaim, After Life follows a man dealing with his wife’s recent death.
“People have liked what I’ve done,” Gervais told Deadline in 2019, “but not on this deep an emotional level. The love has usually been, ‘We love The Office, we can quote it, we grew up with it.’ That’s lovely, but it’s not an emotional connection. This has been something else, and it’s been nice.”

Audiences will no doubt be hoping for the same “emotional connection” when series 2 of After Life premieres in April.
