Prime Minister Scott Morrison has declined to condemn Donald Trump and his attempt to intervene in the U.S. election voting.
According to SBS, Scott Morrison called for patience as the vital U.S. election unfolds, saying he has faith the country can resolve the contest.
Always keeping it classy, Trump had prematurely declared victory and also baselessly asserted that electoral fraud had taken place.
Our PM refused to say anything about it though, telling reporters that it wasn’t his place to speculate on the outcome of the election contest.
“I’m not a participant in the U.S. political process. It’s not for me to run commentary on those things and I won’t,” he said.
“In terms of the political events in the United States, it’s the appropriate response to be patient and respectful and that’s exactly what we’re doing. We respect the decisions that the American people make in their democracy.”
Opposition leader Anthony Albanese took a similarly diplomatic stance but expressed concern at the scenes of people standing outside polling stations chanting for votes to be counted.
“It is absolutely critical that the counts are allowed to continue,” he said.
“People shouting in a chant stop the count – that’s really shouting stop democracy. Democracy is too important for it be undermined by any individual. America will come through this.”
ScoMo said he had not contacted either Trump or Biden, saying it was not “appropriate at this time.”
“Having a great election with the greatest turnout it’s ever seen in its history is actually a demonstration of democracy working,” he said.
Trump shot his wad remarkably early on Wednesday, November 4th, claiming victory in the election battle. He also accused his Democratic opponents of trying to “steal” the election by counting votes after the polls had closed.
His campaign are not intent on letting this go. They’ve stated that they will contest the result in Wisconsin and also launch legal bids to halt counting in Michigan and Pennsylvania.
There is no proof of any voter fraud at this point.
