Retro gamers the world over are cheering right now, with news that Sega are set to release their Genesis Mini console in September.

Think back to the ’90s for one second, and you’ll probably realise that some of your fondest memories revolve around sitting in front of the Sega with a few mates.

Following up Sega’s Master System, the Sega Genesis (or Mega-Drive, if you didn’t live in North America) was a massive success, owing in part to the popularity of games like Sonic The HedgehogStreets Of Rage 2Mortal Kombat II, and even Disney’s Aladdin.

For a while now, various iconic game consoles have been scoring a re-release, including the likes of the Nintendo Classic Mini SNES, and even the PlayStation Classic.

Now, almost a year on from its announcement, Sega’s long-awaited Genesis Mini console is on the way.

As Kotaku notes, Sega made the announcement at Sega Fes 2019 over the weekend, revealing that the Sega Genesis Mini will officially be unleashed on September 19th.

Initially planned to be released in 2018, Sega reportedly held back production of the console so as to ensure a higher standard of quality upon its release. Undoubtedly, this has got fans excited about what is coming their way in just five months’ time.

At this stage, information is relatively sparse as to which games will be included on the consoles, because as Kotaku points out, some of the already-announced titles are Japan-only releases.

While the Genesis Mini will feature 40 different games, the Japanese edition is confirmed to include titles such as Sonic 2Puyo Puyo 2Shining ForceCastlevania BloodlinesPowerballGunstar HeroesComix ZoneRent-a-HeroSpace Harrier 2 and Madou Monogatari Ichi.

According to a Tweet from the official Sega account, a number of other games have also been announced, including Ecco the Dolphin, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, ToeJam & Earl, and Altered Beast.

At this stage, which games the US and European (which will likely be the same as the Australian version) editions will include is unknown, though it is likely more will be announced in the coming days and months.

However, with the release date of September 19th being confirmed, you might want to start saving your coins, because if the previous demand of mini consoles is anything to go by, this one will be a hot ticket item.

In the meantime, now is the perfect opportunity to revisit some of the stellar music on display in Sonic The Hedgehog 2.
