Seth Rogen is already set to star in the upcoming Super Mario Bros. film, but is he about to headline his own Donkey Kong spin-off as well?

Just when you thought Hollywood execs couldn’t butcher your childhood nostalgia more than they already have, it seems as though rumours are swirling around an upcoming Donkey Kong movie, starring none other than Seth Rogen. Lord help us.

The news comes courtesy of GiantFreakinRobot whose mysterious sources claim that Rogen has signed on the dotted line to head up his own solo movie which is currently in development at Illumination.

For those still catching up, that’s the studio currently producing the Super Mario Bros. animated movie where Rogen will debut his crack at voicing the famous ape. That same film will also start Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Bowser as Jack Black and Chris Pratt as Mario.

Italians around the world are still pursing their fingers at that decision.

According to the rumours, the Mario movie will serve as the lead-in for Rogen’s Donkey Kong project, although it’s unclear if any of the cast will jump across to this new project other than Fred Armisen who is set to voice Cranky Kong.

Diving into some classic Donkey Kong lore, that leaves gaps for the likes of Chunky Kong, Candy Kong, Funky Kong, Dixie Kong and Diddy Kong – who we can only assume will be voiced by Timothée Chalamet at this point. No word yet on what the plot will focus on either, but we’re secretly hoping for a dramatic re-telling of the beloved Donkey Kong Jungle Beat – a Nintendo GameCube title that saw you control DK with a set of Bongo drums. It was magical.

The Super Mario Bros. movie isn’t releasing until December 21, 2022, so don’t expect to go bananas for this spin-off until later in 2023 at best.
