Update 27/9: “>NSW Police have confirmed that a man has now been charged following the vandalism.

Last week, we here at the brag touched on a reason as to why we can’t have nice things. Well, this morning we’ve been presented with another reason. Over the weekend, two gronks were spotted trashing Gundagai statue and absolute Australian treasure, The Dog On The Tuckerbox statue.

A Motorist traveling through the area around 4pm on Saturday spotted the pair, a man and a woman, who were vandalising the statue. The result is the iconic dog and tuckerbox being toppled from its sandstone base, crashing into a surrounding wishing well.

This morning, Police have issued more information about the pair and seem truly hell-bent on catching them as it takes a particular type of gronk to smash up such a treasured that admired Aussie icon. The kind of gronk who knows no bounds. The statue was first unveiled in 1932 and was inspired by a poem, Bullocky Bill, telling the tale of a early settler’s misadventures.

The man is being described as medium build with black hair. He is depicted in the image wearing a black jumper, light tracksuit pants and black glasses, while his female counterpart is described as being of thin build with dark hair. She is pictured wearing blue jeans, a black top and brown jacket.

The Cootamundra-Gundagai Mayor Abb McAlister was understandably gutted at the situation, telling ABC, “It’s iconic, that dog, and the wishing well there, “So when something happens like this it really makes you sick in the stomach,” he said. When I found out this morning I was very angry.”

Police have released images of the pair taken during the incident. Anyone with information is being directed to contact Gundagai Police Station on 02 6944 0499 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Update: Following on from releasing the photos of the suspects, NSW Police have confirmed that a man has since been charged. At 11am this morning, a 28-year-old Wagga Wagga man turned himself into Police, where he was charged with one count of destroy or damage property. He will face court on September 11.
