South Australia is set to implement a lockdown in the same vein of Melbourne in an attempt to stop a second wave of coronavirus in its tracks.
Earlier today, Premier Steven Marshall announced tight restrictions set to kick into effect at 11:59 pm tonight. These new laws will restrict residence from leaving their homes for a six-day period. Exercise will not be permitted. One person per household will be permitted to leave to purchase essentials.
Industries to close include: schools, universities, pubs, cafes, food courts and coffee shops, construction, holiday and rental homes, weddings and funerals, sporting venues, FIFO workers, regional travel facilities, factories, and more.
Industries remaining open: critical infrastructure, supermarkets, medical facilities, public transport, petrol stations, post offices, mining and smelting, childcare facilities for families of essential workers, government facilities, vets, and end of life visits.
“We need a circuit breaker to stay ahead of this. We need breathing space for a contact tracing let’s to protect the elderly, to protect the vulnerable, to protect our entire community. That is why, today, I am asking you to rise to the challenge again,” Premier Marshall announced.
“As of midnight tonight we need our community to pause for six days. A series of wide-ranging restrictions will be implemented to significantly reduce mobility in the community to stop the spread, to stamp out this virus.”
Chief health officer Nicole Spurrier has urged residents in South Australia to stay home and attempt to stop the virus from spreading to other states.
“I do not want to be taking this virus or be responsible for taking this virus to other states,” she shared. “I know people may have made travel plans but there are restrictions to entry to many of the other states in Australia … I would like to see very limited movement between states at this point.”
