It was basically inevitable but season two of Squid Game has finally been confirmed by its creator.

A screening and Q&A was held in Los Angeles when Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed the news to the Associated Press (as per Variety).

“There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season,” he revealed. “So I almost feel like you leave us no choice! But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently.”

Although Hwang wasn’t ready or able to give many concrete details about his plans for season two (nor has Netflix made an official announcement yet), he did say that lead actor Lee Jung-jae will be returning as main character Seong Gi-hu, which is good news indeed.

“I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen. So I will promise you this, Gi-hun will come back. He will do something for the world,” he said.

Hwang got that part about being left “no choice” right: Squid Game has become a cultural phenomenon and Netflix’s biggest series of all time. It’s projected to fetch the streaming platform $891 million, according to documents obtained by Bloomberg.

When speaking to Variety just after the premiere of Squid Game, Hwang discussed the possibility of bringing in a writers room and other directors into any season two of the series.

“I don’t have well developed plans for Squid Game 2,” he said back then. “It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers room and would want multiple experienced directors.”
