If you’re planning on making a blockbuster sequel to a beloved sci-fi franchise, it’s a good idea to alert the cast members, but nobody told this to the producers of the new Star Trek film.

Six years after the last Star Trek film, a sequel was finally announced in January and the news wasn’t just a shock to fans. As per The Hollywood Reporter, most of the cast were completely blindsided: sources said that some but not all of the actors were “not aware that an announcement for another film was coming, much less that their clients would be touted as a part of the deal, and certainly not that their clients would be shooting a movie by year’s end.”

Chris Pine entered into negotiations first, which is unsurprising given his prominent role in the series. It’s not clear which cast members weren’t informed ahead of time, but some big names like Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldaña, and John Cho were probably a little surprised.

The rebooted Star Trek returned in 2009 and its success spawned two follow-up films, 2013’s Into Darkness and 2016’s Beyond. J.J. Abrams and Justin Lin helped to breath new life into the franchise, updating it for modern viewers.

The Star Trek universe expanded in the meantime while the wait for a fourth film in the rebooted film series continued, including two new streaming series, Discovery and Picard.

The new sequel is expected to begin filming at the end of this year, with a release date of December 22nd 2023 marked. Here’s hoping the producers manage to tell the cast about where and when the premiere is taking place before it happens. The script is also still being worked on, according to sources, with no set budget yet in place.
