Clover Moore has announced that the City of Sydney Council will be supporting marriage equality, financial and symbolically.

“Last night our city council voted unanimously to support the YES vote for marriage equality”, she announced on Facebook.

“After fighting for the rights of LGBTI people my entire career, I was proud to stand with my fellow councillors to reaffirm our support for marriage equality. I’ll proudly be voting yes, and hope you’ll join us in ensuring everyone has the right to marry the person they love.”

As part of this support, there will be a mail campaign, and grant funding for Australian Marriage Equality, plus 99 rainbow banners — such as the ones above — will be flown in the city.

As a spokesperson for Moore pointed out when challenged on this support (really?) – “Given there are more LGBTIQ people in the City of Sydney than any other local government area in Australia, the City will continue to support AME as it campaigns for legislative change on marriage equality in the Australian Parliament.”
