Your every movement has become even more trackable, with this morning’s news that Sydney train passengers will soon be able to use Mastercard, VISA and American Express cards in place of Opal Cards.

Light rail and ferry users can — as of this morning — toss their Opal Cards into the sea and instead use credit or debit cards on the service. They will be coming to all train services by the end of the year.

“After overwhelmingly positive customer feedback, we’re adding more services, more modes and more card providers,” New South Wales Transport Minister Andrew Constance said of this morning’s launch.

Opal Cards are not being replaced, and still offer the best bang for your buck, as the weekly discounts and $2.50 Gold Opal fares aren’t yet available via bank cards.

“We are looking forward to rolling out similar solutions in other states and making Australian cities more connected,” Mastercard’s Division President for Australasia Richard Wormald said of the launch.
