In what’s being touted as a major artistic highlight of the 2016 season, Sydney Symphony Orchestra chief conductor and artistic director David Robertson will conduct three great ballet scores Stravinsky composed for the Ballets Russes at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Sydney Symphony will be performingThe Firebird,The Rite Of SpringandPetrushkaacross two weeks in August.

“The Stravinsky ballets – the three that he wrote for Sergei Diaghilev, the then director of the Ballets Russes – are incredibly well-known and loved and yet we tend not to be able to compare them close on to one another,” Robertson says. “The idea of having all three in one season is something I find very appealing because it allows you to hear Stravinsky growing and exploring and at the same time appreciate the incredible qualities that these ballets share in common despite their surface differences.”

Robertson will also be premiering a new commission by Australian Elliot Gyer; The Wolf,a concerto byCrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragoncomposer Tan Dun;The Desert Musicby American composer Steve Reich; and Szymankowski’s first violin concerto with returning soloist Christian Tetzlaff.

The three Stravinsky performances will take place throughout two weeks in August, with The Rite Of Spring beginning the season on Thursday August 4. All the concerts will take place at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall. Tickets start from $39 and can be bought here. For more information check out the event website.
