On June 1st, water restrictions will be enforced in Sydney for the first time in almost a decade. From Saturday, Sydneysiders will be subjected to a level one water restriction.
The introduction of this water restriction comes earlier than expected. Traditionally, level one water restrictions come in motion when dam levels drop below 50 per cent, they’re currently sitting at 53.6 per cent. Water Minister Melinda Pavey has shared that it is “vital we take early and decisive action”
“Regional NSW has been experiencing a record drought,” She elaborated. “Water restrictions in Sydney mean that households across NSW are doing their bit to conserve water.”
NSW has technically been experiencing a drought since mid-2017. The past two years have seen dam levels fall at an average of 0.04% per week.
The restrictions will mean that lawns and gardens can only be watered with a hose fitted with a trigger nozzle, between 4pm-10 am. Whilst sprinklers have been banned indefinitely.
Paths and driveways can only be spot cleaned in an emergency, which is vague as hell. What constitutes an emergency driveway clean?
You’ll also need a permit to fill a new pool greater than 10,000 litres. This, unfortunately, affects me personally because I definitely have a pool greater than 10,000 litres in my grande, luxurious home that has a pool, greater than 10,000 litres.
If you break these water restrictions you could cop a fine of up to $220, or $550 for companies.
So be water savvy, stop showering indefinitely, don’t flush your shit, save this gorgeous home we call earth.
