Taiki Waititi said he and Chris Hemsworth were surprised while watching Thor: Love and Thunder when they saw a certain end credit scene.

In a recent interview, Taika Waititi talked about a shocking moment for Chris Hemsworth and himself while watching the final moments of the Thor: Love and Thunder run time. When the credits finished, and they saw the “Thor will return” card on the backend of their film, they admitted they were quite shocked at seeing it there. Meaning the two probably had no prior knowledge that they were expected and confirmed to return for another installment.

Taika Waititi says the “Thor will return” card at the end of Thor: Love and Thunder was seriously a surprise to both him and Chris Hemsworth:

“I’m not joking. I saw it in the theater and I was like, “Oh, shit. Really?” Even Chris was like, “What?””

The quote comes from an interview Taika did with Insider after he was asked about the specific end-credit scene.

“I’m not joking. I saw it in the theater and I was like, “Oh, shit. Really?” Even Chris was like, “What?” But, of course he’ll be back. He’s the best character. I mean, I may be a little biased, but he’s the most fun to watch.

Now, I don’t know what would be next. I would definitely do one, but only if Chris did it. But it would need to be something surprising and unexpected for me to want to do it. Like what would be the new take? The battles and all the fighting is fine, but I would want something that feels unexpected when it comes to the story. Like making just a $5 million movie with no fighting at all, just Thor on a road trip. Like Nebraska.”
