Telstra and Optus have announced free broadband data packages amid the nation’s COVID-19 outbreak. I remain a tin-foil hat sceptic that monolithic corporations like this actually have the public’s best interest at heart. But it’s free data so if I gotta pledge my undying love for capitalism then so be it.
The company announced that they are scrapping data limits for anyone with a personal or small business home broadband account until April 30th. Post-paid mobile customers will also be blessed with an extra 25GB of data to use within the next 30 days. Whilst pre-paid mobile customers with a credit balance of over $40 will be able to snag themselves an extra 10GB of data. To unlock these hectic deals meander your way over to Telstra’s 24×7 app.
The homies over at Optus will give postpaid mobile customers a one-off, piping hot serving of 20GB of data throughout April. Those still holding down the pre-paid fort and top up with at least $40 will be given an extra 10GB as well. For more information head here.
These decisions were made in light of more and more Australian students and workers working from amid COVID-19. “With more people working, studying and generally spending more time at home streaming content, we are seeing a change in the profile of data traffic on the NBN with increasing residential usage of the network throughout the day and in the busy hours,” an NBN spokesperson revealed in an interview with Australian Financial Review.
If you’re wondering what to do with this meaty hunk of free data, why not have a peruse through our list of TV series to binge-watch during self-isolation.
